In addition to being an artist Julia Hamilton is a talented make-up artist. She is also one of the very specific inspirations to do this show.
I saw her work and thought she had taken skulls, bones and made something very different and special. Sure, others have used skulls and bones in their art but hers struck me as original. These pieces are not about "shock value"..."oooh look I made art out of BONES." They use bones to create aesthetically pleasing pieces, pieces that are neither macabre nor gruesome. They tend to be beautiful in fact.
Hamilton is also the proprietor of Pretty Windy City, a mobile artistry team working in make-up. They do airbrush make-up for weddings and more. Make-up as art is a completely unexplored territory. We have had grafitti, once seen as a crime, turned into art and tattoo artists, once reviled, now have shows in prestigious museums and galleries. Art comes from everywhere and creating art based on the intimate knowledge of make up? It is incredibly intriguing.
